NZW36 | Device Handler Installation for Scene Control

Please ensure you have the scene enabled plug before installing the device handler. The plug will have NO LOGO on the front.

Step by Step Instructions

– Step 1 –
Installing the Device Handler & SmartApp

Materials Needed:

  • SmartThings IDE Account (free)
  • Device Handler (link below)
  • Advanced Button Controller SmartApp (link below)
  • PC or Mac

Open up three tabs on your computer’s browser.

The first tab will be: https://graph.api.smartthings.com
The second tab will be: Inovelli NZW36 Device Handler (Scene Enabled)
The third tab will be: Advanced Button Controller SmartApp

Now, go to your first tab (SmartThings IDE) and follow the directions below:

  • Click on the green, “Login” button on the top right of the screen
  • If you have an account already, please login
  • If you don’t have an account, please create one using the same email/password as your current SmartThings account (ie: your mobile account)
  • Once logged in, click on, “My Locations” located on the top left of the screen — you should see your HUB’s location there
  • Click on your HUB’s location underneath where it says, “Name” — you may be prompted to login again — if so, please login again

Now we are going to install the device handler:

  • First, click on, “My Device Handlers” located at the top, in the middle of the screen
  • Click the green button titled, “Create New Device Handler”
  • Click on, “From Code”
  • SWITCH TO TAB #2 (ie: Inovelli NZW36 Device Handler | Scene Enabled URL) and copy all 198 lines of code
  • SWITCH BACK TO TAB #1 (ie: SmartThings IDE) and paste the code in the white space
  • After you’ve pasted the code, click, “Create”
  • Then click, “Publish” and then, “For Me”

Finally, let’s install the SmartApp:

  • Click on, “My SmartApps” located to the left of, “My Device Handlers”
  • Click the green button titled, “New SmartApp”
  • Click on, “From Code”
  • SWITCH TO TAB #3 (ie: Advanced Button Controller SmartApp URL) and copy all 644 lines of code
  • SWITCH BACK TO TAB #1 (ie: SmartThings IDE) and paste the code in the white space
  • After you’ve pasted the code, click, “Create” and then, “Save”
  • Then click, “Publish” and then, “For Me”

-Step 2-
Changing the Device Type

Now that the device handler has been installed, we need to change the plug type so SmartThings knows that your plug is now going to use the handler that was just installed.

To do this do the following:

  • Click on, “My Devices”
  • Find your Inovelli NZW36 Scene Enabled Plug and click on it
  • Click on, “Edit”
  • Click on the drop down menu under, “Type” (about halfway down) and select, “Inovelli 1-Channel Smart Plug NZW36 w/Scene”
  • Finally, click, “Update”

When you go back to your, “My Home” and click on the NZW36 plug, your screen should look like this:

-Step 3-
Setting up your Plug with the, “Advanced Button Controller” SmartApp

Almost there – the hard part is done! Now we’ll show you how to set up your scene using the SmartApp you just installed.

  • Open up your SmartThings app
  • Click on, “Marketplace”
  • Next, click on, “SmartApps”
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click on, “My Apps”
  • Create a new button device mapping by following the steps below:
    • Step 1: Select Your Button Device – click on your NZW36 plug
    • Step 2: Configure Your Buttons – see below for detailed instructions

Configuring Your Switch (detailed instructions)
Regardless of what you choose, make sure you choose, “When Pushed” and NOT, “When Held”. More to come below.

Example #1 – Bedtime Scene: Turn off all lights and lock door(s)

  • Click on the (+) sign by, “Switches (Turn Off)”
  • Select the lights (or switches) you’d like to turn off under the, “When Pushed” section and click, “Done”
  • Scroll down and click on the (+) sign by, “Locks (Lock Only)”
  • Select the lock(s) you’d like locked under the, “When Pushed” section and click, “Done”
  • Then click, “Save” and then click, “Save” Again
  • You should see a confirmation

Go ahead and test it out by double-clicking on the manual button on your NZW36. Make sure to press it fast (2x in 1 second).

Example #2 – Movie Scene: Turn off all lights and turn on colored lights

  • Click on the (+) sign by, “Switches (Turn Off)”
  • Select the lights (or switches) you’d like to turn off under the, “When Pushed” section and click, “Done”
  • Scroll up and click on the (+) sign by, “Switches (Turn On)”
  • Select the light(s) you’d like turned on under the, “When Pushed” section and click, “Done”
  • Then click, “Save” and then click, “Save” Again
  • You should see a confirmation

Alternately, instead of pressing, “Switches (Turn On)”, you could select “Dimmers (On to Level – Group 1)” or if you’ve created a Routine within the smart app, you can actually engage a routine (scroll to the bottom where it says, “Run Routine”).

These are just some ideas — the sky is the limit!
