NZW37 Device Handler Setup for SmartThings Users

Congratulations, you chose the device handler route. Once this is setup properly, you won’t have to worry about any SmartApps or setting a, “Master” switch. All of that will be done for you. All thanks to a member of the SmartThings Community. After the device handler is installed, you will have the ability to control the device endpoints simultaneously as well as individually. Let’s get started.

Please note — we just had this created, so we do not have any videos yet of how to install this — the written instructions should be able to help and we are currently working on videos as well.

Thank you for your purchase of the NZW37 Smart Plug. If you run into any problems along the way, please contact us. We’re here to help! In addition, to visit our troubleshooting page, click here.

Step by Step Instructions

(For Android Users – iOS Users, please use these instructions until further notice. The apps are almost identical)

** Note: If you’ve already installed the plug on your network, you will need to do delete the child devices in IDE  once you install the device handlers — Please see note at the bottom on how to do this **

– Step 1 –
Installing the Device Handlers

Materials Needed:

  • SmartThings IDE Account (free)
  • Both Device Handlers (links below)
  • PC or Mac

NOTE: If you already have the smart plug paired to your HUB, you may need to delete it and then start with the instructions below before re-adding it. But you can try this with the plug installed as well.

Open up three separate tabs on your computer’s browser.

The first tab will be: https://graph.api.smartthings.com/
The second tab will be: Inovelli Device Handler #1
The third tab will be: Inovelli Device Handler #2

Now, go to your first tab (SmartThings IDE) and follow the directions below:

  • Click on the green, “Login” button on the top right of the screen
  • If you have an account already, please login
  • If you don’t have an account, please create one using the same email/password as your current SmartThings account (ie: your mobile account)
  • Once logged in, click on, “My Locations” located on the top left of the screen — you should see your HUB’s location there
  • Click on your HUB’s location underneath where it says, “Name” — you will be prompted to login again — please login again

Now we are going to install the first device handler:

  • First, click on, “My Device Handlers” located at the top, in the middle of the screen
  • Click the green button titled, “Create New Device Handler”
  • Click on, “From Code”
  • SWITCH TO TAB #2 (ie: Inovelli Device Handler #1 URL) and copy all 286 lines of code
  • SWITCH BACK TO TAB #1 (ie: SmartThings IDE) and paste the code in the white space
  • After you’ve pasted the code, click, “Create”
  • Then click, “Publish” and then, “For Me”

Perfect, now we are going to install the second device handler:

  • Again, click on, “My Device Handlers” located at the top, in the middle of the screen
  • Click the green button titled, “Create New Device Handler”
  • Click on, “From Code”
  • SWITCH TO TAB #3 (ie: Inovelli Device Handler #2 URL) and copy all 50 lines of code
  • SWITCH BACK TO TAB #1 (ie: SmartThings IDE) and paste the code in the white space
  • After you’ve pasted the code, click, “Create”
  • Then click, “Publish” and then, “For Me”
  • If you have your plug installed already, please do the following:
    • Next, go to, “My Devices” at the top and click on it
    • Then, search for your Inovelli Plug and click on it as well
    • Click on, “Edit” at the bottom and then click on, “Type” and scroll down to the bottom of the list and select the new device handler (should be something like, “Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug” or “Show Home 2-Channel Smart Plug”
  • If you do not have your plug installed already, please install it and then do the following:
    • Next, go to, “My Devices” at the top and click on it
    • Then, search for your Inovelli Plug and click on it as well
    • Click on, “Edit” at the bottom and then click on, “Type” and scroll down to the bottom of the list and select the new device handler (should be something like, “Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug” or “Show Home 2-Channel Smart Plug”

** Note: If you have already paired your device prior to the installation of the plug (or you don’t see the individual channels on your, “My Home” page) you will have to make the following changes:

  • Within IDE, click on your Child Devices
  • Scroll to the bottom and click, “Delete” (you will have to do this for both)
  • Open up your SmartThings app and click on the main switch (ie: Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug)
  • Click the gear icon on the top right of the screen
  • Click, “Save”
  • You should now see the three switches on the main screen!

– Step 2 –
Gather Your Materials & Find an Appropriate Outlet

Materials Needed:

  • Grounded Outlet
  • Cell Phone or Tablet
  • SmartThings HUB 2.0

Locate an indoor outlet which is grounded and within the recommended distance (less than 30ft) from your Z-Wave Hub/Gateway.

Walls, furniture, and other obstructions may affect the communication between the Plug-In Module and your Hub/Gateway, so please keep this in mind when selecting your location.

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 3-
Plug In Lamp(s)/Appliance(s)

Before plugging in your module, please plug in the device(s) you are looking to control.  In addition, make sure that both devices together do not equal more than 16 Amps. Each individual outlet can handle up to 10 Amps, but together, the device cannot go above 16 Amps.

Note: It is not recommended plugging in space (electric) heaters, or any other appliances that may present a hazardous condition due to unattended, unintentional, or automatic power control.

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 4-
Plug In the Module & Exclude (Optional – But Highly Recommended)

You are now ready to plug in your module and start to sync to your SmartThings HUB.

Before we start the official syncing (including) process, we are going to go over how to exclude a device. This step is optional, but we like to do it with any new Z-Wave device we get/test, just to make sure. The excluding process is like a reset, and it’s helpful if you bought the device used, or if there is an issue with your HUB/Gateway.  Plus, it doesn’t hurt!

Excluding Steps:

  • Open up your SmartThings app
  • Click on the three lines in the top left of your app (menu)
  • Click on, “Hub is Online”
  • Click on, “Z-Wave Utilities”
  • Click on, “General Device Exclusion”
  • Push on the Middle Button on the front of your NZW37 3-5 times within 3 seconds
  • You should now see that your device is excluded

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 5-
Adding (Including) to the Network & Completing the Setup Process

Once you’ve finished the Exclusion Process (or if you’ve skipped it) it’s time to include your Z-Wave device to your network.

Including Steps:

  • If you’ve excluded, press the back button, and then the “x” until you are back at the, “My Home” screen where you can see the, “Add a Thing” button (note: if you have a lot of devices, you will have to scroll down to the bottom)
  • Press, “Add a Thing” and it will automatically start looking for devices
  • Press the Middle Button on the front of your NZW37 3-5 times within 3 seconds to activate inclusion
  • You should now see that your device is detected (it should say, “Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug”)

Setup After Inclusion

  • After your device was detected, press, “Save” (or if you’d like to rename your device, you can do that and then click, “Save”)
  • Once you click, “Save” a pop up will appear asking you to, “Confirm Paired Devices” — Click, “OK”
  • Now once you are back on the, “Home” screen, you should see three (3) switches
    • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug
    • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug (CH1)
    • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug (CH2)

Here is what they each control:

  • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug
    • This is your main switch. If you press this switch, it will turn on/off both endpoints simultaneously
  • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug (CH1)
    • This is the right side outlet (if looking directly at the front of the plug) — you will have individual control of this outlet
  • Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug (CH2)
    • This is the left side outlet (if looking directly at the front of the plug) — you will have individual control of this outlet

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

Once complete, click on your “master” switch (ie: Inovelli 2-Channel Smart Plug) and it should look like the above picture (main switch up top — two channels below)
