Step by Step Instructions

(For Android Users – iOS Users, please use these instructions until further notice. The apps are almost identical)

– Step 1 –
Gather Your Materials & Find an Appropriate Lamp/Light Fixture

Materials Needed:

  • An always powered on lamp/light module (this is standard for all smart bulbs — always on power is how they are able to communicate with your HUB)
  • Cell Phone or Tablet
  • SmartThings HUB 2.0

Locate an indoor lamp/light fixture which is within the recommended distance (less than 30ft) from your Z-Wave Hub/Gateway.

NOTE: Please pair your bulbs as close to your HUB as possible — once paired, you may move them to their final location (within 30ft of your nearest Z-Wave repeater or HUB).

Walls, furniture, and other obstructions may affect the communication between the Smart Light Bulb and your Hub/Gateway, so please keep this in mind when selecting your location.

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 2-
Screw In the Bulb & Exclude (Optional)

You are now ready to screw in your bulb and start to sync to your SmartThings HUB.

Before we start the official syncing (including) process, we are going to go over how to exclude a device. This step is optional, but we like to do it with any new Z-Wave device we get/test, just to make sure. The excluding process is like a reset, and it’s helpful if you bought the device used, or if there is an issue with your HUB/Gateway.  Plus, it doesn’t hurt!

Excluding Steps:

  • Open up your SmartThings app
  • Click on the three lines in the top left of your app (menu)
  • Click on, “Hub is Online”
  • Click on, “Z-Wave Utilities”
  • Click on, “General Device Exclusion”
  • Power on your bulb and tap on the top of the bulb until it turns off
  • You should now see that your device is excluded

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 3-
Adding (Including) to the Network

Once you’ve finished the Exclusion Process (or if you’ve skipped it) it’s time to include your Z-Wave device to your network.

Including Steps:

  • If you’ve excluded, press the back button, and then the “x” until you are back at the, “My Home” screen where you can see the, “Add a Thing” button (note: if you have a lot of devices, you will have to scroll down to the bottom)
  • Press, “Add a Thing” and it will automatically start looking for devices
  • Make sure your bulb has power to it (it should still look like it’s off since it turned off during the exclusion process — but power should still be going to it) and tap on the top of the bulb until it turns green (and then it should turn off)

NOTE:

If your bulb starts with the actual light being on, it will not turn green, but rather just turn off — this is fine as long as you get a confirmation message from SmartThings saying your bulb was successfully paired.
  • You should now see that your device is detected

Setup After Inclusion

  • After your device was detected, press, “Save” (or if you’d like to rename your device, you can do that and then click, “Save”)
  • Once you click, “Save” a pop up will appear asking you to, “Confirm Paired Devices” — Click, “OK”
  • Now you are back at the, “My Home” screen and you will see the RGBW Bulb labeled, “RGBW Light”

You have now successfully added the bulb to your network. If you want to see how the bulb works, feel free to move on to, “Step 4 — Controlling your bulb”.

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**

-Step 4-
Controlling your Bulb

Now that you have your bulb paired, we’ll show you what all the bells and whistles your app has and how they control your bulb.

  • Click on your bulb from the “My Home” tab
  • You’ll see a “Color Wheel” — this is how you change colors of your bulb
  • The top slider is what controls your dimming settings
  • Scroll down to the very bottom and you will see another slider — this one controls your warm/cold settings
  • Click, “Reset Color” if you want to control your warm/cold settings
  • Scrolling all the way to the left will turn your light cold, while scrolling to the right will turn your light warm
  • The last scroll bar is located underneath the color wheel
  • This one allows you to keep within whatever color family you choose but makes it brighter or darker within that family (ie: in the video, the color wheel is on “red” but the slider will turn it to light pink when you slide it to the left

Congratulations, you now have the ability to control your light bulb to 1,000’s of different colors!

**If you are having issues pairing your device, try pairing the device directly next to the HUB. You can move it to its final destination once paired/included. This will solve 95% of all problems you may have when pairing**
